Agoura Power of Yoga (Walk-ins encouraged)

In a Yin Yoga class, students remain in poses passively for extended periods of time in order to delve deeper into the connective tissues of the body. It supports mindfulness, allowing the student to be in the present moment, helps students discriminate between sensation and pain and how to tolerate being uncomfortable which is a skill that can be used on and off the mat. Modern society emphasizes being first, striving to be the best and pushing harder in every part of our lives. We are constantly distracted by external stimuli, hunched over computers, phones and car steering wheels. This “yang” part of life takes center stage, leaving little room for balance. Yin yoga helps to bring balance into yang-heavy lives. Yin Yoga has the potential to unravel the deeper layers of the physical and mental body and sometimes even the emotional and spiritual ones as well.

Our goal in life is not to become perfect:
our goal is to become whole.

For decades, scientists have researched the effects of deep relaxation. The Relaxation Response described by Herbert Benson, M.D., is a “physiological state characterized by a slower heart rate, metabolism, rate of breathing, lower blood pressure and slower brain wave patterns.” His and many other studies support the mind-body connection and confirm the measureable benefits of deliberate stillness.

The goal of a restorative practice is to move through a series of poses and, in each, create a state of no movement and no effort, thereby quieting the brain. In this 90-minute class, we will use props to assist support and relaxation as we move the spine in all directions, stimulate and soothe the organs, and use an inversion to help reverse the effects of gravity.

Everyone can benefit from restorative yoga, including those uncomfortable with the idea of being still for an extended period. If you challenge yourself in a high intensity power yoga class, consider challenging yourself in the same way by taking a restorative yoga class.

“Taking time to relax and renew is vital to living well.
Through restorative poses, you come into harmony with your body’s natural rhythms.”
